The 8 Claude Tools (And What They Actually Do)

Think of Claude as a team of specialists, each designed for a different type of work. Here's your cheat sheet:

1. Claude Chat - For Thinking

What it is: The basic chat interface most people use.

Best for: Brainstorming, working through messy problems, sharpening rough ideas, having a thought partner.

The beginner mistake: Asking Claude to do all the work for you.

The smart move: Use it as your thinking partner. Bring it your half-formed ideas, attach relevant documents, and let it push back on your thinking.

Try this prompt format:

You are a [specific expert]. I'm trying to figure out [problem]. 
I'm attaching my notes. Your job is to push back on what's weak 
and sharpen what's real. Ask me clarifying questions before responding.

Pro tip: When you get stuck, open a second tab and ask Claude to explain a concept in real-time. You can learn and execute simultaneously.

2. Claude Projects - For Memory

What it is: A dedicated space where Claude remembers your context, files, and instructions across multiple conversations.

Best for: Anything ongoing - brand messaging, building a business, learning a skill, managing a long-term project.

Why this matters: Instead of explaining who you are and what you're working on every single time, Claude already knows based on the context files you upload.

How to set it up:

Click "Projects" in the sidebar
Create a new project (e.g., "Newsletter Business")
Add custom instructions about who you are and what you need
Upload relevant files (your brand guide, past content, audience research)
Now every chat in that project has full context

Real example: I have a "Newsletter Project" where Claude knows my audience, my tone of voice, my content style, and my past issues. When I ask for help with any task, it’s already personalized to my brand and the style of this newsletter.

The big shift: It quickly & easily allows you stop starting tasks from zero every time.

3. Claude Cowork - For Execution

What it is: A desktop app that takes ACTION on your computer, not just gives you answera.

Best for: Multi-step tasks involving your files, folders, and apps.

Quick examples:

"Take all customer interviews in this folder and find the top 3 reasons people are leaving"
"Build me a personalized morning briefing magazine every day at 7am" (last week's deep dive of this is here!)
"Organize my Downloads folder by file type and date" (I have an Instagram post showing you how to do this here)

The game-changer: It can connect to other AI tools through something called MCP connectors (think of these as keys that let Claude work with other apps).

4. Claude Code - For Building

What it is: Claude's developer-grade tool that lets you build actual apps, websites, and automations.

Why most people don’t use it: It has the word "code" in it, but don't need to know how to code. You just need to describe what you want in plain English.

Beginner-friendly example:

I run a small consulting business. Build me a simple dashboard where I can:
- Track my client pipeline
- See which deals are at risk
- Get a daily summary of what needs my attention

Make it look clean and easy to use.

What you'll get: A working prototype you can actually use, refined through conversation until it works exactly how you want.

Don't let the name scare you. If you can type in English, you can use this. Just start with something simple.

5. Claude Chrome Extension - For Browsing

What it is: A browser extension that lets Claude see what you're looking at and act on it in real-time.

Best for: Anything you do in your browser - which let's be honest, is most of your work day.

Quick wins:

Claude can analyse any webpage you’re viewing (I’ve done this with my Instagram and it works amazingly well - have a look here)
Filling out a tedious form? Claude can help you complete it
Reading a long article? Claude summarises while you keep scrolling

How to install: Search "Claude" in the Chrome Web Store, click install. That's it.

The shift: You get to browse the web with Claude by your side.

6. Claude Skills - For Repeatable Work

What it is: Custom "recipes" you create once and reuse forever.

Think of it like: Saved templates that make Claude better at specific tasks you do regularly (it’s basically a really detailed explanation of how you want Claude to do that task).

How to use: I wrote a newsletter on how to create Claude Skills a few weeks ago right here.

7. MCP Connectors - For Connecting Everything

What it is: The behind-the-scenes magic that lets Claude work with other apps (Notion, Slack, Gmail, design tools, etc.).

The simple explanation: Think of MCP connectors as keys. Each key unlocks a different tool. Once Claude has the key, it can act through that tool.

Real example: I connected Claude to my email and calendar. Now when I'm planning my week, Claude can pull my actual meetings and emails to help me organize my time.

How to add a connector:

Open settings
Go to "Customize"
Click the "+" button
Choose from the existing Connectors or paste the connector URL from the tool you want to connect

Don't overthink this one. Start with one connector tthat matches a tool you use daily. Build from there.

8. Claude Design - For Visual Work

What it is: Claude's design and visual creation capability that lets you generate, edit, and refine visual content through conversation.

Best for: Anyone who needs visual content but doesn't have design skills (or the budget for a designer).

Quick examples:

Create simple infographics from your data or insights
Design presentation slides that match your brand
Generate mockups for landing pages, ads, or product ideas

Try this prompt:

Design a simple infographic that explains [your topic] for [your audience].
Use a clean, modern style with [hex codes of your brand colours if you have them].
Make it scannable in under 30 seconds.

Why this matters: Design used to be a bottleneck for non-designers. Now you can generate decent visual content in minutes - directly from the same Claude account you're already using for everything else.

The reality check: This is still in beta and won't replace a professional designer for big brand work. But for the 80% of visual content you need quickly? It's incredibly useful.

The PRIME Framework (Your Cheat Sheet for Better Prompts)

No matter which Claude tool you're using, this 5-step framework will dramatically improve your results:

P - Purpose: What's the goal? Be specific.
Example: "Turn this messy proposal into a clean client memo"

R - Research: What context does Claude need? Files, background, examples.
Example: "Here's my notes, the client's brief, and our previous proposal"

I - Interview: Ask Claude to interview YOU before responding.
Example: "Ask me clarifying questions before you start"

M - Mechanics: How should the output look?
Example: "I want bullets, not paragraphs. Keep it under 500 words."

E - Examples: Show Claude what “good” looks like.
Example: "Here's a memo from a previous client I liked. Match this style."

The result: Better outputs on the first try. Less back-and-forth. Less frustration.

You don't have to use all 7 tools immediately - that would be overwhelming.

Adobe, Canva and CapCut all jumped into bed with Gemini in the same week

Within four days of Google I/O 2026, the three biggest names in creator tooling confirmed native integrations inside the Gemini app. Canva went live on May 19 (you can now type @Canva inside a Gemini chat to generate designs, search your existing Canva content, or edit through natural language), with Adobe and CapCut rolling out over the coming weeks. With this Google tightened Gemini's usage limits on May 17, dropping the Pro plan's usage multiplier from 33x to just 4x over free users.
